Hurray! My first ever article is coming out in the March edition of Duiken Magazine in the Netherlands. If that was not enough already, they also chose one of my shots of the humpback as the cover shot for the edition. It will hit the market on 21st of February and is being pressed right now! Needless to say, I am very, very happy with it! ;-)

Getting around in 3rd world countries like Mozambique is a wicked experience, but sometimes hard and painstakingly slow. Using guided tours/travel often is the easiest way to go, but most of the time less memorable since you travel amongst other tourists with western habits, language and attitude. Travelling by public transport gives a traveller the best feeling for a country, the culture and its people. That is the way I like to travel, however on some of those days you get more than you bargained for..

Day two of our dhow safari started off with a beautiful sunrise over Bazaruto island. A great warming-up for the day to come and a wicked scene to be spectator of.. Early that morning I woke up to the sound of birds and since I was unable to continue my sleep, I quickly searched for photo gear. I just had to take some pictures of this sunrise. Somehow it was lots easier getting out of bed for this, than for a regular day at work.. ;-)

After our wicked stay in Kruger National Park we flew out of Nelspruit into the fishing village of Vilankoulos in the northern part of the Inhambane province. This small town is growing in popularity with backpackers because it is the step off towards the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Various companies operate the waters with day trips or multi day excursions to the islands. Although tourists can visit the islands by other means of transport, the best way to go and see the islands is, in our opinion at least, by a doing a safari in a traditional dhow...

After our stay in Umkomaas it was time to set out on the long drive to Mozambique. We were aiming for the Kosi Bay border, which took us at least 6 hours to reach. We left our rental car in the lockup and transferred to the other side to meet our pickup. The main goal of this part of the trip was to snorkel with the inshore bottlenose dolphins of the waters around Ponta do Ouro.
